Signature Program
Callings
This Treasure in Clay Jars
Callings is the signature leadership-development program of The Commune Institute. Its yearlong cohort experience accompanies youth and young adults of African descent, ages 14–21, through art, contemplative spirituality, cultural inquiry, service, Elders’ counsel, and peer shepherding. Participants explore futures in ministry and public service without pressure to settle a life calling before they are ready.
Questions for a Life in Community
Participants return to five questions across the year. Art, story, service, study, and counsel allow each answer to deepen or change.
Callings draws from Akan and other Africana approaches to maturation.

A Year of Art Counsel and Service
Phase 1
Belonging
Establish trust, access needs, goals, and cultural grounding.
Phase 2
Inheritance
Study people, histories, places, systems, and traditions.
Phase 3
Reflection
Compare self-understanding with practice and trusted response.
Phase 4
Responsibility
Test gifts in relation to community needs and professional roles.
Phase 5
Direction
Name practices, relationships, and next steps.
Phase 6
Yɛ Week
Complete one cohort’s passage and welcome the next cohort.
Art Is a Way of Knowing
Participants work with clay, image, language, music, movement, theatre, film, digital media, and ritual arts. Creative practice helps them interpret identity, examine power, study inherited stories, test possible callings, and imagine forms of service.
No One Discerns Alone
A circle of accompaniment surrounds each participant. Together they share responsibility for memory, counsel, challenge, access, and care.

Yɛ Week
Yɛ Week is the annual passage between cohorts. Cohort One presents its work, names next-stage commitments, receives communal affirmation, and enters the alumni circle. Cohort Two begins its year through art, cultural inquiry, relationship, and witness.

Callings protects participant agency, privacy, creative ownership, disability access, and the right to report harm. Every adult accepts written conduct standards. Consent for participation does not grant permission for publicity, fundraising, research, or publication.
